The Mental Health Benefits of an Organised Home

In 2025, we’re more aware than ever of the importance of looking after our mental health.

Conversations about wellbeing, mindfulness, and emotional balance are becoming a natural part of everyday life — and with good reason. From juggling busy work schedules to managing the demands of family life, our minds are constantly switched on.

But one of the most overlooked factors that quietly affects how we feel day to day? Our homes.

If your space feels chaotic, cluttered, or like you’re always one step behind on the >dying, you’re not alone. The good news is that creating a more organised home doesn’t just make things look nice — it can have a powerful impact on your mental health too.

A Calm Home = A Calm Mind

Imagine walking into your home and instantly feeling a sense of calm. You know where everything lives. Your surfaces are clear. You’re not surrounded by piles of “stuff” you don’t use. Sounds dreamy, right?

That’s because visual cluJer equals mental cluJer. Studies have shown that physical mess can increase cortisol levels (the stress hormone), impact sleep, and even lower productivity. On the flip side, a home that’s been through Sully decluttered and organised creates breathing space — both physically and mentally

When your home is working with you and not against you, you have more time and energy to focus on the things that really matter: your family and friends, your wellbeing, and your passions.

Three Simple Ways to Stay Organised at Home

Whether you’re just starting your decluttering journey or looking to stay on top of a tidy home, here are my top three tips that make a real difference:

1. Labels, labels, labels!

Clearly labelling storage boxes, baskets, and containers makes it easy for everyone in the home to know where things belong. It saves time, cuts down on mess, and encourages children (and partners!) to get involved in the tidying. A label might seem small, but it’s a game-changer.

2. Stop keeping things ‘just in case’

We’ve all done it – held onto something “just in case” we might need it one day. But the truth is, these items often sit untouched for years, taking up valuable space. The more ‘just in case’ clutter you accumulate, the more overwhelmed your home (and your mind) feels — and the harder it becomes to find what you actually use.

3. Do a quick evening reset

Spend 10–15 minutes each evening rese^ng your high-traffic areas — think kitchen counters, play areas or the living room. Pop items back where they belong so you wake up to a clutter-free space. It’s a small habit that makes a huge difference to your mornings.
